Designers get other designers and people from different departments within the company like business, marketing, QA, customer service, etc. and sometimes people from outside the company like the real user, SEO expert, etc. in a room and collaborate.
They gather all sort of information, designs, important points, etc. but what happens after that?
Yes, they collect piles and piles of sticky notes. They have to make points and rearrange everything to categorize based on feature, functionality, and design
As usual distributed the large sticky notes and colorful sharpies to the collaborators.
I used the collaboration method and named it “Triple D”
Define | Design | Discuss.
- Purpose of theis design colloberation meeting.
- Everyone is same while collaborating. No one is bigger or smaller in Hierarchy.
- Introduction of the people if they do not know each other.
- Showing the tools which will be used during the process. (see the list below)
- How the process will follow. (Define, Design, Discuss)
- Second round of design and display.
Necessary items for design Collaboration.
In this phase, I made groups of 2 and gave them 10 minutes to define what all areas on the service they would think is best to incorporate the charity program. I had my playlist ready for the 10 min and played soothing music.
I again gave then 7 minutes to design.
This phase is the phase where other than designers everyone gets nervous, but I showed them some example of my other collaborations. The stickies with boxes, circles, lines and words. After making them comfortable, it’s time for design.
After the rough sketch was designed, they one by one came up and placed their sticky notes on the clear wall and talked about their thoughts about the design.
Although it’s only boxes, words, and lines but the ideas drawn was clear.
Other collaborators were open to ask questions. The designer was most welcome to say I did not think about it and that was ok.
The second round
After all the thoughts were shared discussed and digested. There was another round of design and placing the design on the wall and sharing the thoughts.
This round is very important as this is the time when collaborators try to take best of other designs and let go some of their own designs and come up with something different, or they are open to stay with their previous design.
One by one they came to the wall and place the round 2 sticky and talked about the thoughts behind the design.
By this round, everyone is okay with the concepts because either they have heard before and discussed or its one of their own.
This approximately takes about 2 hours for each feature.
The facilitator/designer takes all the sticky notes with them and then start placing them in the area where it can be available to see throughout the build or approval of the final design.
